Electronic Dog Doors
PetSafe Electronic Dog Doors & SmartKey Pet Doors

Give your pet freedom without compromising control over access. PetSafe Electronic SmartDoors use a compatible SmartKey™ worn on your pet's collar. Radio-frequency technology detects the SmartKey and unlocks the door for your pet, before automatically locking again after use.
Once your pet has passed through, the door returns to its locked state, giving you a much greater level of access control than a standard manual dog flap.
How Does a PetSafe Electronic Dog Door Work?
The PetSafe Electronic SmartDoor uses radio-frequency identification technology to detect a compatible SmartKey worn on your dog's collar.
When the SmartKey comes within range, the electronic locking mechanism releases so your dog can use the flap. Once the SmartKey moves away, the door locks again automatically.
This gives your dog freedom to come and go while helping prevent access by unregistered pets and wildlife.
Selective Entry Without a Microchip
Unlike a microchip pet door, the PetSafe SmartDoor does not rely on your dog's implanted microchip. Access is controlled by the compatible electronic collar key.
This can be useful if:
- Your dog does not have a compatible microchip
- You prefer collar-key access
- You want to add access for more than one dog
- You are replacing an older electronic pet door system
Automatic Locking for Better Access Control
One of the main advantages of an electronic dog door is that it does not remain permanently unlocked.
The system recognises the authorised SmartKey, releases the flap and then returns to its locked position after your pet has passed through.
This helps provide greater control than a conventional unrestricted dog flap.
Suitable for Multiple Pets
Selected PetSafe electronic dog doors can be programmed to work with additional compatible SmartKeys, making them suitable for households with more than one dog.
Each authorised pet wears its own compatible key while sharing the same electronic door.
Always check the individual product specification for the number of keys supported.
PetSafe SmartKey Collar Access
The electronic key is worn on your dog's collar and transmits the signal used by the SmartDoor to identify an authorised pet.
If a key is lost or damaged, replacement SmartKeys may be available separately for compatible models.
Where Can PetSafe Electronic Dog Doors Be Installed?
Depending on the model and accessories used, PetSafe electronic dog doors may be suitable for:
- Timber doors
- Suitable uPVC door panels
- Selected composite doors
- Metal doors
- Wall installations with the correct wall kit
Always check the installation requirements of the individual model before cutting a door or wall.
Wall Installation
Selected PetSafe electronic dog doors can be fitted through walls using the correct wall entry kit or tunnel system.
Wall thickness, lining and weather protection all need to be considered before installation, so check the manufacturer's instructions and accessory compatibility carefully.

Electronic Dog Door or Microchip Dog Door?
Both systems provide selective access, but they identify your pet differently.
A PetSafe Electronic SmartDoor uses a compatible collar-mounted SmartKey, while a microchip-operated pet door reads an implanted microchip or compatible electronic tag.
Collar-key systems can be a good choice where you want straightforward electronic access control without relying on your pet's implanted chip.
Electronic Dog Door or Manual Dog Flap?
A conventional dog flap is normally the simplest and most economical option if you do not need to control which pet enters.
An electronic dog door is worth considering if selective access is important and you want the flap to remain locked to unauthorised animals.
Important Security Information
An electronic pet door provides selective pet access, but it should not be treated as a substitute for normal household security.
Larger dog doors create substantial openings, so the location of the installation and any additional internal security measures should be considered carefully.
Need Help Choosing the Right PetSafe Electronic Door?
PetSafe has produced several electronic pet door systems and accessories over the years, so compatibility can sometimes be confusing.
If you're replacing an older SmartDoor or need an additional SmartKey or wall installation accessory, contact CatFlaps.co.uk with the model number of your existing product and we'll be happy to help identify the correct option.
